The African Association for Pastoral Studies and Counseling (AAPSC) was formed in February, 1985 in Limuru, Kenya. The Association seeks to promote the Advancement of Pastoral Studies and Counseling from a distinctively African perspective and world view.

The AAPSC encourages specialized consultation, researched publications, and training in clinical and counseling education relevant to the African Situation.

HISTORY OF PREVIOUS CONGRESSES

  • The First Congress was held in Kinshasa (DR Congo)
  • The Second one was held in Accra, (Ghana) in 1993
  • The Third Congress was held in Pretoria, (S. A) in 1997
  • The Fourth was held in Yaounde, (Cameroon) in 2001
  • The Fifth Congress was held in Abuja (Nigeria) in 2001
  • The Sixth Congress was held in Stellenbosch (S. A) in 2009
  • The Seventh Congress is being held in Gomoah Fetteh (Ghana) in 2018

MISSION
The Association is to promote the Ministry of Pastoral Care and Counseling throughout sub-saharan Africa by:

  1. Developing chapters in each sub-sahara country and Africans in Diasporas.
  2. Promotion of the training of clergy and laity in the ministry of care and counselling.
  3. Encouraging Africans in the Diaspora as to assist in the promotion in the care and counseling ministry within the African continent.

CONGRESS AIMS
Continental Congresses of AAPSC aim at the following:

  • To create a platform in Africa to share and discuss scholarly work done in the field of Pastoral Care and Counseling.
  • To present research and preliminary research findings amongst African Scholars in the field of Pastoral Care Counseling.
  • To reflect on challenges facing communities and people on the continents from a specific perspective, i.e. pastoral studies and counseling.
  • To establish, build and strengthen partnerships between researchers and practitioners in Africa.

BENEFIT OF THE 7TH CONGRESS CODE-NAMED GHANA CONGRESS, 2018

Preparations towards the Ghana Congress, 2018 is pre funded by the Ghana Association of Pastoral Care and Counseling. Others sponsors would be announced as they come in.

The congress shall provide a place to share research and practices in the field that has relevance to Pastoral Theological Scientists, faith communities and faith based organizations.

There would be opportunities for progressive networking and establishing collaboration with various national and international partners.

The Ghana Congress shall provide the opportunity for leading role-players both in academia and those in practice to come together to debate crucial issues that would help Africa to heal and to care for the continent.

In 2009 a paper by Bowers (2009:96-106) lamented the weak scholarly engagement on Pastoral Care on the continent and said this could be traced back to the gap within the African Theology movement”.

Let us boldly interrogate these issues as follows:

  • How is pastoral care being practiced in the frontlines of people’s lives?
  • How are pastoral theologians practicing ministry at the end-point where people live?

It is for this genuine lack of concentrated caring ministry at the real-life challenges that the theme for the GHANA CONGRESS 2018 is titled:

“WHERE FORCES MEET”

Prof. V. Magezi of South Africa, incidentally, the Keynote Speaker for the Ghana Congress 2018, hinted that in our part of the world, it is important to note that pastoral care is considered as part of church pastoral work.

This situation is different to some areas in the West where ministries such as hospital, psychotherapy etc remain a specialized field.
